A review of Deceptive Cadence by Katie Hamstead. Second chances offer tough decisions.

Deceptive Cadence by Katie Hamstead

deceptive-cadence-reveal

I just finished the latest release by Katie Hamstead called Deceptive Cadence published by REUTS. Here’s the blurb that’s listed on Goodreads :

Cadence Anderson has the perfect definition of happily ever after . . .

Until she doesn’t. A freak earthquake shatters her life as surely as her home, taking away everything she holds dear. She wakes in a hospital to find that her beloved husband and infant daughter have been killed, crushed by the earthquake’s wrath. Disoriented, injured, and alone, Cadence refuses to accept the loss. So when a man claiming to be her guardian angel appears and offers her a chance to go back in time to save her family, she doesn’t need to give it a second thought. She accepts.

Thrust back eleven years, she now faces the ordeal of high school all over again. But this time, she’s armed with all the knowledge of her adult life and the determination to do everything better, from preventing the loss of her best friend to avoiding her original, drama-inducing boyfriends. She’s focused solely on Austin, her future husband, and is content to bide her time until she meets him again.

But then James Gordon crosses her path. Cadence wants to remain single, but James has his sights set. He is determined to win her over, and he’s very hard to resist. As Cadence starts to develop unwanted feelings for him, she realizes he threatens to disrupt everything, changing the future and distracting her from her original goal. Now, Cadence must choose: deny the unpredictable and exciting path James offers her, or stay true to the life she had and is trying desperately to resurrect. Second chances are more complicated than they seem.

My take on Deceptive Cadence

What a mind blowing concept. Cadence awakens in the hospital after a wreck that has taken the life of her husband and sweet baby girl. She’s given the chance to relive her life from the age of fourteen onwards to slightly change the end result and save both her husband and daughter. (There are a few golden caveats she must respect – no warning of large events, no benefitting, etc)

Hamstead handles the plot with ease as she sends Cadence back to the 9th grade armed with a greater understanding of life and more maturity than a fourteen year-old could ever posses. But Cadence is thrown a few curveballs as she settles into her new- younger body and finds herself once again victim to emotions and hormones of that age. Although she’s armed with a certain understanding of what the future holds, the decisions she faces in securing that future are not as easy as anticipated. Her influence on those around her begins to slightly change their lives and hers in turn.

I enjoyed reading Deceptive Cadence not just for the almost squirm-worthy memories it elicited of my own high school experience, but at the thought of reliving those years as a wiser and kinder person. I found the concept both wickedly brilliant and terrifying at the same time. I’ll certainly read the next installment as Deceptive Cadence leaves the reader unsure about the decisions Cadence will make as she heads off to college.

I would definitely recommend Deceptive Cadence.

Happy Book Birthday to Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh by Katie Hamstead

Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh by Katie Hamstead turns 1 today.

kiya

I’m a big fan of Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh and here’s why:

The character Kiya is a strong-willed young woman who garnered my respect and interest from the beginning of the story when she demonstrates unselfishness and bravery to save her sisters. Originally named Naomi, Kiya has a sense of wisdom and a sense of self well beyond her years that serves her well as she deals with many challenges in her new life. She is intuitive, intelligent, and resourceful.

Horemheb. Read Kiya and you will understand. I love the relationship that develops between Kiya and Horemheb because of its complexity and depth.

The setting is wonderfully crafted with vivid details that allowed me to envision the rooms, the open skies, and the dust in the air.  I was transported to ancient Egypt while reading.

What an interesting angle to tell the story from. Katie wove cultural norms into the Kiya’s story to establish authenticity and it became more like a rich tapestry of history. The relationships developed between the wives, the hierarchy of power, and the unspoken rules gave the story legitimacy.

Between the men on the ship wanting to test her, the purification process when her head was shaved, and the encounters with Nerfetiti, Kiya deals with conflict repeatedly, which made finding a stopping point in the Kiya story a little difficult.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kiya : Hope of the Pharaoh. Parts 2 and 3 are downloaded on my Kindle. If you haven’t had a chance to read Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh, you should.

You can find it at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Cover me!

Before a reader cares about your protagonist, gets lost in your plot, or races to the last page, first they must open your book.

Articles flood the web with essays on what makes good book covers, which elements must be on the front, and how to break covers into categories. And the same three components are listed as critical selling points: title, author’s name, and image.

But the image, whether it’s a symbol, text, an artistic graphic, a scene or a face, needs to draw the reader not only to the book, but inside.  Bottom line – it’s pass, pause, or purchase.

I’ve spent the last few weeks looking at covers as I search for the perfect formula for my own. There are many different categories and ways to categorize the covers, but I have been focusing on two major elements: symbols/settings versus characters/people. (Within those two categories there are more potential breakdowns, but people, this could go on forever.)

Symbols/Settings:

Some authors use an icon or a single element that represents an organization, an uprising, a prop, a defining moment or a clue to the story contained within. They may use a snapshot of a setting that will become relevant as the story unfolds. For the reader to understand the meaning and the significance of the cover art, they must read the book. It’s a secret the author shares only once you’ve ventured far enough within the pages.

My opinion? It’s simple elegance. And quite often, brilliant. I love the thought of gaining passage and being included. And when I visualize my future cover,  several icons and props come to mind.

Below are examples of enticing symbols/settings on the covers of: Without Bloodshed by Matthew Graybosch, Scrapbook of My Revolution by Amy Lynn Spitzley, Angel’s Edge by Vicki Keire, The Charge by Sharon Bayliss, and Theocracide by James Wymore.

without-bloodshed-final-covercover2500-200x300cover10001-206x300 The-Charge-Cover-copy-193x300cover10004-210x300

And on the flip side, People/Characters:

The face is a portal and, as humans, we are drawn to them. Putting characters on the cover forces immediate introductions, sends messages wrapped with emotion, and suggests potential relationship tension before the spine is even cracked. Partial views hint there may be more to the character than we anticipate,  downward glances can suggest modesty or subjugation, and crossed arms can signal solidarity or defiance.

My opinion? Part of the allure of a character based cover for me is the immediate connection. Do I like this person? Why are they sad or happy? What is going on in their world? I can see one of my main characters on the covers, daring you to come along.

Below are examples of covers with characters that elicit responses based on expressions and poses. Quite Contrary by Richard Roberts, Broken Forest by Eliza Tilton, Fall by A.K. Morgen, Kiya, Hope of the Pharaoh by Katie Hamstead and Five by Holli Anderson.

cover2500-199x300 cover25003 Fall_Large-208x300 Kiya-Ebook-Cover-211x300cover10001-200x300

So, is there a right or wrong choice? No, not at all, which why this journey is so difficult. We respond to different cues based on our individual personalities and experiences. I love the mystery and secret wrapped in a symbol and the intimacy offered in a face. I’m torn as to what will go on my cover, but whatever I choose, I must draw the reader inside.

What do you look for on a cover?
