Limitless Publishing
240 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
When Eliza Rose found out she
was a witch, she thought she’d be casting spells…
However, it turns out Eliza is on her way to becoming a mystical assassin. But
first she has to start college with her best friend Dawn Roberts and her feline
familiar Jared. If you think college is stressful, try finding your best friend
being seduced—nearly to death—by a venomous fairy. Something is horribly wrong,
and Eliza must find out what it is.

Knowing who’s who in the Mystical world can be a burden—or save her life…

Murderous mermaids, seductive fairies, and manipulative elves are terrifying
enough, but pure witches can become corrupt…and they’re the most dangerous
creatures of all. Eliza struggles to discover the source of this chaos, but is
repeatedly attacked—and saved by a shadowy figure. On a very personal note,
Eliza must learn whether corruption is beginning to claim her mother.

Her strongest ally might be handsome, enigmatic Donovan—but he is hiding a
shocking secret…

Donovan wants nothing to do with his old gang—not after the things they’d made
him do. But when he meets Eliza, he’s both frustrated by her amateur skills and
impressed by her emerging strength, and he feels compelled to help her grow
into the assassin she’s meant to be.

Every answer has a price, and there are beings born to corrupt the pure.

Eliza fights to master her skills before it’s too late, while Donovan must
determine whether Eliza can be saved…or if she must die to keep her out of the
hands of those who would use her powers to reign over all of Mystical.

Alexa JacobsAbout the Author

Alexa Jacobs was born and raised in the suburban outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. She met her husband through friends in high school, and began what turned out to be a short lived career in the financial industry. With her first child, she became a stay at home parent and threw all of her energy into becoming the queen of Pinterest before Pinterest was a thing.

When her second child headed off to kindergarten, Alexa thought that it was time for a career change.

After a decade with at least one child underfoot 24 hours a day, it was time for her to discover who she was going to be when she grew up.

Turns out, she was a mom who sat by the window and cried the entire day on that first day of “freedom” from early parenthood.

A few months, and many kindergarten volunteer days later, she sat down at the computer and dusted off the rough draft of a story she had crafted years ago. That draft turned into her debut book, Rising Ridge.

Alexa is a member of the Romance Writers of America, and participates in many writer circle groups.

Deceptive Cadence

Cadence Anderson has the perfect definition of happily ever after . . .

Until she doesn’t. A freak earthquake shatters her life as surely as her home, taking away everything she holds dear. She wakes in a hospital to find that her beloved husband and infant daughter have been killed, crushed by the earthquake’s wrath. Disoriented, injured, and alone, Cadence refuses to accept the loss. So when a man claiming to be her guardian angel appears and offers her a chance to go back in time to save her family, she doesn’t need to give it a second thought. She accepts.

Thrust back eleven years, she now faces the ordeal of high school all over again. But this time, she’s armed with all the knowledge of her adult life and the determined to do everything better, from preventing the loss of her best friend to avoiding her original, drama-inducing boyfriends. She’s focused solely on Austin, her future husband, and is content to bide her time until she meets him again.

But then James Gordon crosses her path. Cadence wants to remain single, but James has his sights set. He is determined to win her over, and he’s very hard to resist. As Cadence starts to develop unwanted feelings for him, she realizes he threatens to disrupt everything, changing the future and distracting her from her original goal. Now, Cadence must choose: deny the unpredictable and exciting path James offers her, or stay true to the life she had and is trying desperately to resurrect. Second chances are more complicated than they seem.

Deceptive Cadence combines the soaring emotion of a heartfelt romance with the innovative storytelling of magical realism, crafting a uniquely moving, intricate tale about love and loss that asks: what would you do if given the chance to right all your wrongs?

katherine hurleyAbout the Author
I’m Katherine Hurley, author of The Griever’s Mark series. Book 1 will be out in November 2014 and Book 2 in spring of 2015.

My love of myth and legend led me inexorably into fantasy, and I have no intention of leaving. Ever. I grew up riding horses and finally, finally, finally have one of my very own. (I’m hoping Astarti will get some quality horse time at some point, but Drifters don’t really need horses. Hmm.) I’m also an avid (but amateur!) mountain biker and whitewater kayaker.

I was born in New Mexico, grew up in Kansas, got my MFA in Michigan, and now live in West Virginia. The most beautiful place I’ve ever been is New Zealand.

My **spoiler-free** thoughts on The Griever’s Mark

I have to admit The Griever’s Mark had a slow start for me. There were so many descriptions early on that I felt a bit bogged down… and the Drift was a tough concept. Fatigue may have played into my early opinion… but you had to wrap your mind around a new concept for existence.

Once I passed my early hesitation,  I fell into pace with the story. The descriptions flowed, the Drift became understandable and Astarti’s character emerged fully fleshed. That’s when The Griever’s Mark definitely took off.

Hurley did a good job creating a world with both physical and *almost electric layers. Her characters were likable yet flawed, the conflict palpable, and pace was excellent. The plot was well planned and unique. (I was thinking Lord of the Rings one minute and The Matrix the next.)

Would I recommend The Griever’s Mark? Yes.

Will I continue the series to find out what happens? Yes. I entered the giveaway on Goodreads for  Chains of Water and Stone (The Griever’s Mark #2)

Hidden Deep (Book 1 of the Hidden Trilogy) by Amy Patrick

Release Date: 03/23/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Give in to the Glamour…
Sixteen-year-old Ryann Carroll has just run into the guy who saved her life ten years ago. You might think she’d be happy to see him again. Not exactly. She’s a bit underdressed (as in skinny-dipping) and he’s not supposed to exist.

After her father’s affair, all Ryann wants is to escape the family implosion fallout and find a little peace. She also wouldn’t mind a first date that didn’t suck, but she’s determined not to end up like her mom: vulnerable, betrayed, destroyed. Ryann’s recently moved back to her childhood home in rural Mississippi, the same place where ten years earlier she became lost in the woods overnight and nearly died.

She’s still irresistibly drawn to those woods. There she encounters the boy who kept her from freezing to death that long ago winter night and was nowhere to be seen when rescuers arrived. He’s still mysterious, but now all grown-up and gorgeous, too. And the more she’s with him, the greater the threat he poses to Ryann’s strict policy– never want someone more than he wants you.

Seventeen-year-old Lad knows the law of his people all too well: Don’t get careless and Don’t get caught. It’s allowed his race to live undetected in this world for thousands of years, mentioned only in flawed and fading folklore…

Lad’s never been able to forget about Ryann since that night ten years ago. When he sees her again, his fascination re-ignites and becomes a growing desire that tempts him to break all the rules. He’s not even supposed to talk to a human, much less fall in love with one.

And the timing is atrocious. The Assemblage is coming, the rift between the Light and Dark is widening, and mysterious celebrity fan pods are becoming more and more widespread and influential. Lad may have to trade his own chance at happiness to keep the humans, especially Ryann, blissfully unaware and safe.

Here’s what I liked about the book:
Yara , the main character, is spirited and motivated. She trains to be a Raider (despite not having the body type or grace needed). She refuses to give in (drained from battle wounds she summons strength to continue to fight). And when it comes down to it, she’s a typical teen (She wants her parent’s approval, omits parts of the truth that will get her in trouble, and isn’t quite sure about her feelings for Joshua).
The setting was wonderful, both the underground and the New State territory were richly built, giving both a realistic vibe. I easily envisioned the movement through both areas. And the creations that exist in New State were creative and eerie. Excellent development.
Remote, takes place in a future dystopia where lines that separate healthy computer interactions with actual dependence blur. Having two teenagers in my house, the continual reliance on wireless devices is not just reality, but life. This story does a fabulous job of taking the “need to be plugged in” to the next level. After reading this book, I brought up the topic and we discussed the story line at the dinner table. Very cool.
