All the World’s a Stage

All the world’s indeed a stage

And we are merely players

Performers and portrayers

Each another’s audience

Outside the gilded cage

Occasionally, you come across a poem, a book, or a song that stays with you. The message inspires, provokes, or challenges you. And the interpretation of its meaning is uniquely your own.

I’m a huge fan of Rush, the phenomenal three-man band from Canada. I caught one of their Presto! concert stops in Virginia (eons ago). For me, their lyrics hold truth beyond context.

Limelight addresses both the realities of fame and the nature of our interactions. As social media evolves, we open our lives for the world to see, leaving us accessible, exposed, and vulnerable. Is this good or bad? Only time will tell how this level of exposure affects us on both a personal and societal level.

But regardless of your level of anonymity or celebrity, “all the world’s a stage and we are merely players.”

The excerpt above comes from the song entitled Limelight. The lyrics for the entire song are below.

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage

Cast in this unlikely role
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact

Living in the limelight
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem
Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation
The underlying theme

Living in a fish eye lens
Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
I can’t pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend

All the world’s indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each another’s audience
Outside the gilded cage

  1. There are many songs that stay with you because of the way they have touched you. Liked the post! Stopping by from A To Z Challenge.

    • 😀 (Limelight is one of favorites, too.) So many of Rush’s lyrics stay with me. Have you listened to Time Stand Still, Closer to the Heart, or The Trees? The list could go on and on. Care to share other songs on your favorites list?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

      • Oh girl, have I hear those other songs? Hell yes, many times. Rush is my all time favorite band! All time favorite song: The Analog Kid. I love the entire Signals album. The Pass is also a great one, as well as Presto. I could talk for hours about how much I love Rush.
